A recent study of injured workers was performed to identify factors that are most likely to increase the odds of having back surgery performed.
Following an injury, patients who visited a surgeon first were about 20 times more likely to have back surgery than those who visited a chiropractor first. The type of doctor seen initially was a stronger predictor of surgery than other factors like pain severity, amount of disability, age, etc. The researchers noted, "There was a very strong association between surgery and first provider seen for the injury, even after adjustment for other important variables."
