Cardiologists have recently fallen out of their chairs around the world as a new study confirms the large cardiovascular benefits of a healthy fat diet over a low-fat diet. The New York Times giddily reported, "This is a watershed moment in the field of nutrition, medical experts say. For the first time, researchers have shown that a diet can have an effect as powerful as drugs in preventing what really matters to patients — heart attacks, and strokes and deaths from cardiovascular disease."
A group of about 7450 people at high risk of heart disease were studied. One group was instructed to follow a diet full of healthy natural fats (and no calorie restriction), while the other group was instructed to eat a standard low-fat diet (often recommended by cardiologists).
The group eating plenty of healthy fats was so much healthier than the group on a low-fat diet, that the study was stopped after less than 5 years.
Those eating a Mediterranean style diet of healthy fats experienced 30 percent fewer heart attacks, strokes and deaths from heart disease relative to those in the low-fat diet group. This large study confirms previous studies that found no cardiovascular benefit to low-fat diets.
