You're Happy If You Think You're Happy
Be Happy.
Publilius Syrus observed,"No man is happy who does not think himself so."
Author of The Happiness Project, Gretchen Rubin wrote, "...some people are unhappy because they won't take the trouble to be happy. Happiness takes energy and discipline." I encourage you to look for ways to be enthusiastic. Find someone or something to praise. Befriend a not-so-lovable co-worker. Sing! Appreciate the ordinary. Listen and observe nature. Take time to be silly. Sacrifice something for others. Think grateful thoughts. Pray with your heart. Take actions that show love. Act happy! Your actions will be worth the effort!
Studies show that happier people are more likely to help others; happier people are more interested in social problems. Happier people contribute more to others; they do more volunteer work. Happier people remember happy events better. Happier people are perceived to be more friendly and even more attractive; they are also seen as more self-confident. Happy people even out-perform those who are less happy.
Recognize the preciousness of each ordinary day in your life. William Edward Hartpole Lecky wrote, "There are times in the lives of most of us when we would have given all the world to be as we were just yesterday, though that yesterday had passed over us unappreciated and unenjoyed." In her book on happiness, Rubin notes that she... "was overwhelmed by the desire to capture the floods of moments that passed practically unnoticed." Take time to notice and enjoy the little things in your life; be grateful for each blessing enjoyed along the way.
Rubin includes 'splendid truths' in her book, The Happiness Project; this is the second splendid truth:
"One of the best ways to make yourself happy is to make other people happy."
"One of the very best ways to make other people happy is to be happy yourself."
Do you want to be happier? Follow Rubin's third commandment of happiness: "Act the way I want to feel." Generate more positive emotions. Increase the joy, enthusiasm, gratitude, pleasure and friendship in your life. Be yourself; do what you like to do... what you are passionate about. Set goals for personal growth and go for it! The process of striving for goals brings growth... and happiness. Be happy!
