The Power of Commitment
Commit yourself and the task will be complete
On my desk, I have one of my favorite quotations; it comes from The Scottish Himalayan Expedition by Charles Murray, a Scottish mountain climber and writer.
"Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative and creation, there is an elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans; that the moment that one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too.
All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favor all manor of unforeseen incidences and meetings and material assistance that no man could have dreamed would have come his way."
"The moment that one definitely commits oneself, then providence moves too."
Charles Murray completes the statement with words from Goethe:
"Are you in earnest? Seek this very minute,
Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it.
Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it.
Only engage and the mind grows heated.
Begin and then the task will be completed."
Murray and Goethe encourage us to throw ourselves wholeheartedly into whatever it is we decide to do. We should live fully engaged. There are no guarantees in life, but we must put our whole hearts into what we decide to do. If we should fail, then it will be while working hard and struggling greatly... to achieve our dreams.
Decide what you will do, commit to do it and begin... with confidence and commitment!
