The Focusing Question
Andrew Carnegie said, "... here is the prime condition of
success, the great secret--concentrate your energy, thought,
and capital exclusively upon the business in which you are
engaged." In short, FOCUS on ONE thing! But how do you
decide what that ONE Thing is... that thing on which you should
focus?
It is important to begin with the right question if we wish to find the right answer. Gary Keller, author of the book The One Thing, offers the right question for us to use. The focusing question is "What's the ONE Thing I can do/ such that by doing it/ everything else will be easier or unnecessary?"
Keller explains this question will force you to focus... and be specific. He says, "You are allowed to pick one thing and only one thing."The "can do" part of the question directs you to find an answer that causes you to take action. The next part, "... such that by doing... everything else will be easier or unnecessary," is the criterion that your answer must meet. Keller notes, " Most people struggle to comprehend how many things don't need to be done, if they would just start by doing the right thing."
Answering the focusing question will increase our potential for changing our lives... by focusing our energy on taking leveraged action... and by directing us to avoid the distractions of doing a lot of unnecessary things.
Keller refers to identifying the answer to the focusing question as "... finding the first domino in any activity." Find that first domino and focus on is exclusively until you knock it down. Once you have done this, many more dominoes will fall... in the direction of your goal.
Use the focusing question frequently, to direct your leveraged action and avoid distractions.
