Be a Light, Not a Judge
"A smile shines your light on others."
Stephen R. Covey, Author of The 7 Habits for Highly Effective People wrote, “Be a light, not a judge. Be a model, not a critic.” We've all heard it said that if we don't have something nice to say, we should not say anything at all! Instead of criticizing others, we should watch for opportunities to thank, applaud, and appreciate them. If we must criticize, we should criticize the work product, not the person. But it is far better to look for the good in others and reflect that good back to them. Observe others closely, to 'catch them' doing something good... and then applaud them for their positive action.
Author Denis Waitley wrote, “A smile is the light in your window that tells others that there is a caring, sharing person inside.”A smile shines your light on others. It is a simple way to say good day, I appreciate you, I am happy to see you, I care about you. Studies have shown that your smile can change the thoughts of others... for the better... and cause them to smile in return. You never know what your smile will mean to others, or how their smile may, in turn, affect those they come in contact with.
Imagine what a different world it could be if everyone made the effort to offer a sincere smile and a word of acknowledgement or appreciation to others throughout their day. Mahatma Gandhi said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” As we let our light shine, we encourage others to do the same.
"It is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness."
Light is truth, love, integrity. The more we give it away, the more it comes back to us. Eleanor Roosevelt was quoted as saying, “It is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness.”
Light your candle today and every day. As the song says... let it shine, let it shine, let it shine. Share your light with others. Reflect the light of others... and enjoy the light that will be reflected back to you.
Be well,
